Norwegian 23-year-old pole vaulter Sondre Guttormsen, the reigning NCAA Division 1 indoor and outdoor champion representing Princeton, and 21-year-old brother Simen Guttormsen, who earned All-America honors indoors and outdoors for the Tigers, join DyeStat editor Erik Boal to discuss competing together July 22 in pole vault qualifying at the World Athletics Championships at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore. Pal Haugen Lillefosse, the Norwegian outdoor record holder at 19-2.75 (5.86m) at age 21, has given the country three competitors at the World Championships for the first time. Sondre Guttormsen revisits being Norway's only representative in 2019 in Doha, along with last year at the Tokyo Olympics, and how significant it is to see the progress and having three of the top 25 competitors globally this year. Simen Guttormsen reflects on clearing 18-8.75 (5.71m) and 18-9.25 (5.72m) in June at a pair of meets in Sweden, in order to secure his first World Championships berth, and his motivation to advance to the global final. Sondre Guttormsen shares how beneficial his experiences have been competing at Hayward Field, including a third-place finish May 27 at the Prefontaine Classic by equaling his top outdoor clearance of 19-0.75 (5.82m) as well as winning the Division 1 title June 8 with an 18-10.25 (5.75m) performance. He also explains his motivation to not only advance to the July 24 final, but also the intent to challenge for a medal after not qualifying for the championship in Doha and Tokyo. Simen Guttormsen examines how meaningful it has been for both brothers to compete in front of home fans in Norway, like they did in June at the Bislett Games and the country's national championships, and how valuable the preparation has been for the World Championships. They both speak about the impact Swedish star and world-record holder Armand "Mondo" Duplantis has had on the profile of the pole vault and the attention it provided for the event globally. The brothers also speak about the opportunity to compete at a World Championships in the United States, especially so close to their alma mater at Davis Senior High in California, as well as the ability to practice at the Chula Vista Elite Athlete Training Center before traveling to Oregon.
