Princeton pole vaulters and Norwegian standouts Sondre Guttormsen and Simen Guttormsen, the first brothers in the history of the NCAA Division 1 Indoor Championships to both represent the same program in the event during the same final, join DyeStat editor Erik Boal to discuss competing March 11 at the CrossPlex in Birmingham, Ala. Sondre boasts an indoor personal-best of 19-1 (5.82m) and a top outdoor mark of 19-0.75 (5.81m), with Simen achieving a lifetime-best 18-5.25 (5.62m) outdoors and 18-4.75 (5.61m) indoors, both siblings ranking among the top four pole vaulters in Norwegian history. Sondre holds his country's national outdoor record and has been trading the indoor record this season with Pal Haugen Lillefosse, who has cleared 19-1.50 (5.83m). The last brothers to qualify for the Division 1 men's indoor pole vault final were Chris Uhle of Virginia Tech and Joey Uhle of Rice in 2015. The most recent siblings to compete in the same NCAA pole vault championship were Lexi Jacobus and Tori Hoggard of Arkansas, who advanced to eight consecutive women's finals, indoors and outdoors, from 2016-19. Both athletes speak about representing Princeton at the NCAA championship meet, and how excited they are to be joined by Andrei Iosivas in the heptathlon, Christopher Licata in the shot put and the men's distance medley relay lineup. Sondre reflects on his last Division 1 final during the 2019 outdoor season when he competed for UCLA, and the patience he has had to demonstrate with both the 2020 indoor and outdoor championship meets being canceled as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, followed by the Ivy League delaying its return to competition for all member schools in 2021. Simen shares his development and improvement in the event in order to make his NCAA indoor championship debut and join Sondre in competing for All-American honors, as well as a national title. Both athletes reflect on competing against Zach McWhorter of Brigham Young, the collegiate leader at 19-2.25 (5.85m) Feb. 4 at the Dr. Sander Invitational Columbia Challenge at The Armory in New York, following their matchup Jan. 14 at the UCS Spirit National Pole Vault Summit in Reno, Nev. Simen explains the challenges of all Princeton student-athletes balancing a demanding academic schedule with training, travel and competition. Sondre also examines his opportunity to vault March 20 at the World Indoor Championships in Belgrade, Serbia, and his opportunity to square off against Lillefosse in hopes of regaining his Norwegian indoor record, in addition to contending for a medal against one of the strongest fields in meet history.
